Auction fees by platform: buyer's premium and add-ons compared

Buyer fees vary by platform: some charge a flat percentage of the bid, others use a schedule that rises with sale price, and several gate the numbers behind a dealer login. This table lines up fourteen major platforms side by side, checked in September 2026, and says plainly wherever a figure could not be confirmed.

Buyer fees by platform

This covers the buyer side of the invoice only, what a private or business buyer actually pays past the hammer price, not what a seller pays to list a unit. The buyer's premium is the platform's own cut, charged as a flat percentage, a schedule that rises with sale price, or, at three dealer-only marketplaces, a number nobody outside a licensed account can see. The gate fee covers pulling the lot and getting it to the loading area. An internet bid fee applies only to online bidding rather than an in-person sale, and it is usually smaller than people expect. Where a platform publishes a storage fee, the clock starts the day after the sale closes, not the day you happen to show up.

How to read this table

We checked each platform's own published page in September 2026 and named the page next to every figure in an editorial note. Where a fetch failed, a page sat behind bot protection, or a fee schedule was gated behind a dealer login, the cell says so instead of guessing, and any number we do give in that situation is written as a range or a plain "not published" rather than a false precision. A number that looks suspiciously round, like Purple Wave's flat 10% or IronPlanet's exact default-fee tiers, is that round in the company's own terms, not us simplifying it.

A separate category worth naming here: sealed-bid brokers that resell bank-repossessed vehicles, RVs, boats and equipment typically fold their margin into the sale price and the delivery terms rather than publishing a line-item buyer's premium at all, which is why none appear as a named row in this table. If you are weighing a dealer-only auction against a public one, remember that the license itself carries a cost too, even where the per-lot fee looks lower on paper. Disclosure rules that sit outside any single platform's terms, like the FTC's used-vehicle sales rules, still apply no matter what an auction house's own page says.

Fee models in one diagram

Fourteen names sort into three simpler buckets once you look past the branding to how the fee is actually built.

Three ways platforms build a buyer fee: flat percentage of the bid, a schedule tiered by sale price, or a fee not published to the public How a buyer fee is built Flat percentage of the bid Cars & Bids: 5%, $250 to $7,500 Purple Wave: 10% flat Bring a Trailer: capped at $7,500, base rate unpublished IronPlanet default fee: flat by tier, not a percentage Tiered by sale price Copart: roughly 1% to 11%, rises with price and payment IAA: rises with price, exact tiers not public IronPlanet: default and late fees by five price bands Not public, or dealer-gated Manheim, OPENLANE, ACV Auctions: dealer login only GovDeals, Public Surplus, BigIron: no figure published Ritchie Bros: premium exists, percentage not published eBay Motors: direct payment
Grouping the fourteen platforms by how a buyer fee is built, rather than by name. A flat percentage is the easiest to estimate before you bid; a fee that only shows up after a dealer login is the hardest.
